In conversation with Gill Segar from ICatcha

TJDC recently teamed up with Gill Segar from ICatcha on a range of fresh display concepts for the summer. Below we speak
more to Gill, Jacob Nightburg and Camille Casteran of TJDC about the collaboration and the future of retail.
How did this collaboration come about?
Camille :
We love to breath new life into our displays and always look for ways to reinvent them. I find it really refreshing to connect and collaborate with other creatives in the industry and let’s be honest, we love a good brainstorming session.
Do you think the pandemic has changed retail? Has it changed your job in any way?
Gill:
Retail is constantly evolving, the pandemic as we know has accelerated this shift to more online sales. That said, I think retailers selling luxury goods, fine jewellery and watches belong on the high street. With customers making “life event” purchases, despite being well informed on products they still want to see and feel the item and enjoy the in store experience. Therefore it is imperative for high street retailers to focus on the importance of great window presentation, delivering the ‘wow factor’ onto our high streets!
Jacob:
During the pandemic we worked more closely with clients to help modernize their window displays, offering guidance and advice to help bring their vision to life. We found clients gave more time ( which they had ) to prepare their store properly for the reopening, and I think this will continue post-pandemic as retailers realize the importance of a well presented window display.
Can you share with us your trend predictions?
Camille:
Sustainability is definitely something that is becoming increasingly important for all of us and we are spending a lot of time developing solutions for our clients. Working with natural and recycled material is a conscious approach, which also tends to influence brands on a visual level.
Gill:
My predictions for future trends are concepts that focus on natural colours, shapes and materials. I also think playful colours, ranging from calming shades to more vibrant colours will continue, reflecting the mood of optimism.
What was the inspiration behind the concepts? Tell us about your design process
Gill:
Firstly I take into account the colours and shapes of the items I am promoting, keeping in mind that what ever I do in the way of display must compliment and enhance. I then research images that will work within my theme, sketching out ideas and making notes as I go. A display is created to capture a summer vibe using nature as my main inspiration. I then cut the designs and shapes in various sustainable cards and papers and assemble the display.
Why do you like working with TJDC products? Any favourites?
Gill:
The reasons I love working with TJDC is that they are constantly evolving their products and keep up with current trends. There is always something new and I find that very inspiring. If I had to choose a favourite product it would be the ‘Metal cube Collection’. This collection of various size metal frames just fires my imagination, the possibilities for creating unique displays are endless!
What tips would you give to retailers looking to optimise their window
displays this summer? Do you have a favourite VM trick?
Camille:
This might sounds cliché but “less is more” and I cannot say it enough! The window is here to spark interest and no one should feel like they have seen everything before walking through the door. My favourite VM trick is the c3 rule: group your product into three for maximum impact and sales. Deceptively simple!
Gill:
My tips for retailers this summer would be to take a fresh look at your window, create a window display that is vibrant and eye catching, choose a theme and run with it. One of my favourite VM tricks is to use ‘layering’ in a window. This could involve a vinyl on the window, a matching prop within the window and then a backboard or backdrop. This will create depth and gives interests to your display.
Jacob:
Favourite VM trick is pops of colour! Take a selection of single pieces in vibrant colours and pop a different colour into your displays monthly or seasonally to stop your window becoming stagnant, and stop that all important passerby in their tracks.
